Kindergarten Writing Homework
Important Writing Tips:
To start out with, your child's story will just be one sentence long. For example: "I went to the park". As they get more confident, you can add more sentences.
The story does not have to be finished in one sitting. You can continue it another day if you can tell your child is getting burnt out.
Ask guiding questions to find out what your child knows before you give him or her an answer.
When they reread their story to see what word comes next, make sure they are touching the words (1-1 correspondence).
Encourage them to use their own fingers and hands to reread the story and push up the sounds. If they need support then put your hand on top of theirs and guide them until they are used to doing it on their own. Don't do it for them.
If the word they are trying to spell is long, break it down into syllables and assist them in sounding out each syllable section of the word until it is completed to make it less intimidating.
If there is an odd rule or letter that doesn't make sense phonetically, just tell them the rule for it and soon they will start to pick up patterns. For example: e at the end of a word makes the vowel say it's long sound (cake instead of cak).
