Volunteers
I LOVE volunteers and am excited to welcome you into our classroom as soon as we have established routines and procedures in the next couple of weeks. I will keep you posted!
Class Dojo
You should have received an invite via email to my classroom management program called Class Dojo. The way I utilize this program is as follows:
Each Student receives 4 Dojo Points at the beginning of each day for their Dojo Avatar. The goal is for them to keep the points which are based on daily goals we have made and committed to as a class. If they lose points due to poor choices, one point per warning, then you will see the results if you have signed up. If 3 or more points are lost I will also contact you via email or phone to discuss what took place and the student will lose a few minutes of recess as a consequence. During this time he or she will write an apology note to whomever his or her choice affected. If a student loses a point, he or she has a chance to improve the rest of the day. If improvement is achieved I will notify you by awarding a point at the end of the day indicating that they worked hard to follow a rule they had previously broken.
The kids LOVE to customize and change their Dojo Avatar. To do this you will need to set up their student account so they can change it from there. Please let me know if you need help with this.
Homework:
I will be sending home a homework folder this Tuesday, September 5th. This folder contains handwriting pages with instructions on how and when to complete them. We do a lot of writing in Kindergarten and it is so important for each student to develop good writing habits from early on in the year so we don't have to correct bad habits later on. It is also a good idea to make sure you are reading at least 15 minutes a day 5 days a week with your child. This can include books from the Take Home Reading Library, books you or your child's siblings read to him or her, or any other reading your child does.
Take Home Books
In the homework folder you will receive a sign up sheet for the Take Home Reading Library. Please return the signed sheet to school by NO LATER than this Friday if you are interested in participating in this program. I highly recommend it!
September Curriculum:
The first few weeks of school are mostly dedicated to a review of the letters and sounds along with practicing rules and procedures.
Language Arts and Phonics: review of letter names and sounds, handwriting practice, sight words (I, a, can, am, the we), 1-1 matching while reading, name writing.
Social Studies/ Science: how are you special? families, friendship
Math: 2D shapes, rote counting and understanding amount counted within 10
Captain Spotlight:
Your child will have an opportunity to be our Captain during the year and will have the chance to be spotlighted. This will usually happen on a Monday. A week or two before your child's spotlight I will send home a card stock page in a plastic page protector that you can decorate with your child for his or her captain spotlight. Feel free to decorate both sides and include your child's name, favorite food, favorite hobbies, movie, and any pictures you would like. We will enlarge the page through projection so the students can easily see it as your child presents it to the class. It will then be put in a class binder for his or her classmates to look at throughout the year. You are encouraged to join us for this spotlight! Please click on the link below to enter your child's name on a date that works for you to help your child with his or her spotlight. If you haven't signed up by September 10th then I will assign you a day. Thanks!
